2009 Newport High School Coaching StaffJeremy Brown, Varsity Head CoachCoach Brown will be entering his 14th season coaching high school volleyball, his 6th at Newport. Coach Brown has coached at 5 different high schools In California, Idaho and Washington. He has taken teams to the state tournament In all three states with the highest rankings being a 4th and 5th place finish in Idaho 3a 2001, 2002 tournaments, and most recently the 7th place finish at the Washington 3a State Volleyball tournament 2005. These past six years here at Newport have been tremendous. The coaching staff is excellent and is completely dedicated to the goal of making Newport one of the best programs around. Our athletes are dedicated, hardworking, and expect to win. This makes for a coaching and playing environment that is both intense and fun.
“What I most love about coaching volleyball is the timeouts. This is when the intensity is high and
the focus is unequaled. It is also when we as a team come together to support one another. When we
are in a huddle during a timeout nothing else exists but the team. Teamwork to victory!” Steve Trachy, Newport Volleyball Technical Director and Junior Varsity Head Coach Coach Trachy will be entering his 28th season coaching high school volleyball,
his 13th at Newport. In that time the Knights have won 1 League title, including
4 state appearances. Top finishes at state include 6th in 2002 and 7th in 2005.It has been 14 great years at Newport coaching volleyball. It was my goal to establish Newport as a premier volleyball program that could be competitive every year. I believe we have done that with the help of many people involved in the program. Newport has produced 27 1st team all-league players while I have been at Newport. A real testament to the quality of athlete I have been fortunate enough to work with. Some of those have gone on to play College ball including most recently Lauren Barfield at the University of Washington, Lauren Campbell at Seattle University, Sarah Potts at Vassar, Chelsea Lewis at Northwest Nazarene, Laura Chapman at Whitman College, and Jenny Freed at Bellevue Community College. “The thing I love most about coaching volleyball is the interaction with the players and coaches during practice and the excitement of watching a team improve throughout the season. It is also great when former players come back to help in the program or just to say hello. Volleyball obviously has a very positive impact on players’ lives.” Coaching highlight: Every day I get into the gym giving me a chance to work with kids and having Zeke Hsu by my side for all 13 years here at Newport. Sarah Nehring, A-Team Head Coach
Coach Nehring enters her 4th year coaching Newport Volleyball in 2009 and her seventh year coaching overall. She also enters her fifth year teaching both Chemistry and Biology at Newport. Nehring was raised in Santa Clara, California and came to the Northwest to attend Whitman College where she earned her B.A. in Chemistry. She then went on to obtain her Masters in Teaching from the University of Washington.
Zeke Hsu, Varsity Assistant Coach
Coach Hsu will be entering his 14th season with Newport Volleyball Program. Coach Hsu has seen many changes in the Newport program and continues to see constant improvement of Newport Volleyball. During the past 12 years, Coach Hsu has been privileged to be part of 1 League title and 4 state appearances. While coaching during these past 13 years, Coach Hsu attended University of Washington and earned a BA in business administration, and has a wonderful wife and 3 wonderful boys at home. A fun fact, Coach Hsu is a Newport Alumni of the class of 1996 and started his coaching career from that year.
“When I think of why I
love volleyball, it always comes down to two basic principles: Teamwork and
Trust. Without both, a volleyball team could not function. I am thrilled when
I see players constantly creating strong bond with each other and help each
other on and off the court. I’m excited to be here and be part of this awesome
program. GO NEWPORT!!!” |
